چکیده

We report the discovery of a 2.1hr optical modulation in the transient source GS182624, based on two independent high time-resolution photometric observing runs. There is additional irregular variability on shorter timescales. The source also exhibited an optical burst during each observation, with peak fluxes consistent with those of the three X-ray bursts so far detected by BeppoSAX. We compare the low-amplitude variation (∼ 0.06m) to that seen on the orbital periods of the short period X-ray bursters, X1636-536 and X1735-444, as well as the similarity in their non-periodic fluctuations. Other transient neutron star LMXBs possess short periods in the range 3.8-7.1 hrs. However, if confirmed as the orbital, a 2.1 hr modulation would make GS1826-24 unique and therefore of great interest within the context of their formation and evolution.

X - ray / Optical Bursts from GS 1826 – 24

We report results from the first simultaneous X-ray (RXTE) and optical (SAAO) observations of the low-mass X-ray binary GS 1826–24 in June 1998. A type-I burst was detected in both X-ray and optical wavelengths. Its energy-dependent profile, energetics and spectral evolution provide evidence for an increase in the X-ray burning area but not for photospheric radius expansion. However, we may sti...

Periodic Thermonuclear X-ray Bursts from Gs 1826−24 and the Fuel Composition as a Function of Accretion Rate

We analyze 24 type I X-ray bursts from GS 1826−24 observed by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer between 1997 November and 2002 July. The bursts observed between 1997–98 were consistent with a stable recurrence time of 5.74 ± 0.13 hr. The persistent intensity of GS 1826−24 increased by 36% between 1997–2000, by which time the burst interval had decreased to 4.10± 0.08 hr. In 2002 July the recurren...

Non-detection of Gravitationally Redshifted Absorption Lines in the X-ray Burst Spectra Of

During a 200 ks observation with the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer, we detected 16 typeI X-ray bursts from GS 1826–24. We combined the burst spectra in an attempt to measure the gravitational redshifts from the surface of the neutron star. We divided the composite GS 1826–24 burst spectrum into three groups based on the blackbody temperature during the bursts. The spectra do not sh...

Models of Type I X-ray Bursts from Gs 1826-24: a Probe of Rp-process Hydrogen Burning

The X-ray burster GS 1826-24 shows extremely regular Type I X-ray bursts whose energetics and recurrence times agree well with thermonuclear ignition models. We present calculations of sequences of burst lightcurves using multizone models which follow the nucleosynthesis (αp and rp-processes) with an extensive nuclear reaction network. The theoretical and observed burst lightcurves show remarka...

Bursts from Gs 1826-238: a Clocked Thermonuclear Flashes Generator

The transient X-ray source GS 1826-238 was monitored during five different observing periods between August 1996 and October 1998 with the BeppoSAX Wide Field Camera instrument in the framework of a deep observation of the Galactic Center region. A first detection of X-ray bursts from this source occurred, ruling out its previously suggested black hole candidacy and strongly suggesting the comp...
